The research
Modernity and photographic avant-gardes in the work of Emili Godes
Laia Foix · Postgraduate final project · Academic year 2013–2014
The author
The research was carried out by Laia Foix as the final project for the Postgraduate Diploma in Management, Preservation and Dissemination of Photographic Archives at the Escuela Superior de Archivística y Gestión de Documentos. It corresponds to the 2013–2014 academic year and was published within the documentary environment of the Institut d’Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya.
Methodology
It combines three lines of work: a bibliographic review, consultation of contemporary newspapers and magazines, and the location and study of photographs held by heritage institutions and private collections. It includes interviews with descendants, especially Maria Rosa Godes and Emili Godes Faura, and gives particular weight to primary sources.
Objectives and contributions
- To contextualise Godes’s production alongside that of his Catalan, Spanish and international contemporaries.
- To complete his biography using family testimony, bibliography and primary sources.
- To review and locate work dispersed among institutions, private collections and publications.
- To advance the chronological dating and identification of his photographs, especially in less familiar fields (medical, scientific, industrial and advertising photography).
The study itself notes that the research remains open: there are still institutions to consult, bibliography to review, people to interview and photographs to identify. The texts and records on this website may combine several sources (final project, family records, institutional catalogues) and indicate when information is still awaiting confirmation.
